Free 1916 resource packs for Cork schools

Are you a teacher? Are you aware of the free online resource for schools about Cork during the turbulent period 1912-1918? Designed as a resource for students and teachers in secondary schools and focuses on the key period around 1916. The resource packs have facsimile copies of unique and original documents from collections preserved by the Cork City and County Archives service (CCCA), with background information, links, and activities, and additional resources for teachers. The packs were developed by CCCA with the crucial support of the Heritage Council. Research consultancy was provided by Barry Keane, an experienced teacher and published history writer and blogger. Teachers and students in three Cork city schools — St Angela’s, St Patrick’s and Scoil Mhuire — helped trial the resource packs last autumn. CCCA deputy archivist Timmy O’Connor said: “The packs are an important part of our local centenary commemorations for 1916 and the 1912-1922 Decade of Commemorations.

“They are freely accessible on our website, but we will also be contacting every secondary school in Cork city and county about them.”
